Many types of monsters are sensitive to sunlight. In fact, recent scientific studies have shown that Dracula himself, and all his vampire descendants, carry the gene responsible for severe photodermatosis, the sunlight disease.
Alternately, other monsters’ sensitivity was developed over time, from lack of regular light exposure. Many monsters have physical abnormalities and malformations that are widely regarded as grotesque. (See Frankenstein and the Creature from the Black Lagoon under Our Monster Friends.) Such monsters find that negative reactions from the public are more common during the day.
In any case, monsters favor the cover of darkness for socializing and running their errands. Werewolves prefer to pick up their fresh-meat dinners at night, King Tut’s mummy hosts a poker match every other Wednesday, and ghosts find that the moonlight keeps them from looking washed out. Perez Hilton recently spotted Sasquatch and his friends as they entered a night club, and Frankenstein’s most recent bride was recently spotted at a local Piggly Wiggly picking up a few last-minute dinner items.
