Hitchhiking is dangerous.
You’re out alone, along an otherwise deserted highway. Tired, anxious to get to where you’re going. And suddenly you see someone.
You exchange a few cursory words. A “hey, where are you headed?” followed by a “I’m heading in that direction, too.”
Then suddenly you’re not alone anymore. You sit side by side in the car, watching the miles pass into darkness behind you. After a few hours, you grow accustomed to the quiet company, and you get your guard slip.
You think to yourself, “I guess picking up hitchhikers doesn’t have to be dangerous, after all.”
That’s the moment we were waiting for.
